The National Day celebrates the official birthday of the Grand Duke. The date of 23 June was fixed in 1962, regardless of the reigning sovereign's actual date of birth, to take advantage of the long summer days. Celebrations span two days, with the main festivities on the eve, 22 June.

Celebrations begin on the evening of 22 June with the changing of the guard at the Grand Ducal Palace, followed by a torchlight procession and spectacular fireworks. On 23 June, a Te Deum is celebrated at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, followed by a military parade. Street parties, concerts, and fireworks take place across the country. Luxembourg City transforms into a large open-air celebration.

Regional Traditions

Luxembourg City (Fakelzuch)

On the eve of 23 June, a torchlight procession winds through the capital's streets. A 20-minute fireworks display is launched from the Pont Adolphe at 11 PM. The Grand Duke watches from an official reviewing stand.

Esch-sur-Alzette

The Hereditary Grand Duke and Grand Duchess always visit Luxembourg's second city on National Day. The Grand Duke visits a different commune each year.

Kinnekswiss (Luxembourg City)

On 23 June, the Spillfest (games festival) runs from 10 AM to 6 PM in the Municipal Park. Associations and artists offer educational games for families and children.

Notre-Dame Cathedral

On the morning of 23 June, a solemn Te Deum mass is celebrated in the presence of the Grand Ducal family. It is preceded by a 21-gun salute and a military parade.

Grand Ducal Palace

On the afternoon of 22 June, the ceremonial Changing of the Guard takes place at 4 PM, watched by the Grand Ducal couple. This ceremony marks the official start of the National Day festivities.
