St Nicholas Day

01

Historical Context

St Nicholas Day falls on 6 December. In Luxembourg, it is a major celebration for children, bigger than Christmas for the youngest ones. Primary school pupils get the day off.

St Nicholas Day is one of Luxembourg's most cherished traditions. Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra in the fourth century, is the patron of children. In Luxembourg, the celebration features the Houseker, the dark companion of Saint Nicholas who reminds children to behave well.

Saint Nicholas (Kleeschen) visits schools and families, accompanied by the Houseker. Children receive sweets, chocolate, and Boxemännercher (brioche figures). Primary school pupils get an official day off. In the evening, children place their slippers by the door.
