Buergbrennen

01

Historical Context

Buergbrennen takes place on the first Sunday after Carnival, 42 days before Easter. It is a uniquely Luxembourgish tradition where large bonfires chase away winter.

Buergbrennen (castle burning) is an ancient Luxembourgish tradition dating back to Celtic times. Communities build immense pyres to symbolize the end of winter and welcome spring. This tradition is unique to Luxembourg and cannot be found elsewhere in this form.

Local communities gather around a large cross- or castle-shaped bonfire. After lighting, everyone shares the traditional Bouneschlupp (green bean soup). Hot drinks and Glühwein warm the participants. It is a cherished moment of village togetherness.
